What if the statements singles often receive from married couples flipped? What would it sound like? In a weekly e-newsletter from editorial director, Kim Calvert of Singular magazine, she recently came across an article on Onely.org, a website that offers their perspectives on the single life. This particular posting was a parody of the statements that married couples often impose on their single friends – but in reverse.
Besides being amusing, it does show the cultural bias against single people in our society. These sound ridiculous, but are very similar to what we often hear. Read them yourself and see what you think:
“Don’t worry, you’ll get a divorce someday.â€
“Oh, you’re getting married? I’m so sorry?â€
“You’re so great – how come you’re still married?â€
“It’s OK to be married for a while, but eventually you need to grow up and become single.â€
“You’re so lucky to be married and not have as much responsibility.â€
“But don’t you feel bad not having a life, seeing as you’re married?â€
“When are you going to get a divorce?â€
“It’s so sad having to come home to a house with someone in it all the time.â€
“Well, I would’ve invited you to book group, except you’re married and I thought you wouldn’t want to be around all those happily single people.â€
“What’s a beautiful woman like you doing married?â€
It makes you stop and think doesn’t it? With a society where there are more singles than married couples over the age of 18, someday this may not be so ridiculous.
